The Author Known professionally as Dr. Abdulwahab  F.R.C.Psych. (Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, UK).  Formerly  a senior British Consultant  Psychiatrist (UK) &(UAE), mental health Director, Academic  and  Mental health expert.

With more than forty - year extensive experiences  both in the UK &

UAE, internationally recognised as an expert in the field of

psychological medicine and former clinical Professor in psychiatry, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, UAE University.

The Author is the pioneer of the first national mental health awareness & anti stigma programme  in the UAE, and  has been  continuously actively involved in mental health awareness and anti stigma campaign since 2000.

The establishment of the Mental health awareness service and campaign in 2000 was provided at the hospital base (Tawam Hospital) and the local community (Al Ain District),UAE.

The Author led the establishment of several specialised psychiatric & Psychological services and had implemented the same principles of the Mental health awareness  and anti stigma programme  such as the  newly established  hospital liaison  psychiatry service (Tawam Hospital, Al Ain District, Abu Dhabi, UAE, 1998),The first National Psycho-oncology service, based at the National Cancer centre, Tawam Hospital (1996).

Had Led the newly established National addiction service (The National Rehabilitation centre, Abu Dhabi, UAE 2000),

The Day hospital service, Tawam Hospital (1997) etc..

Despite his retirement and the limited available   resources  the  Author volunteered in line with his  professional ethic and  his

dedication to the local community  to   exercise his lengthy professional experience, clinical, administrative and academic  skills  to convey voluntary source of mental health information where appropriate  to the community and to contribute in  enhancing mental health awareness.

The published Articles and the information materials  by the Author on this website are  based on his own extensive clinical, academic and administrative experiences plus his  thorough review of  highly selected reliable scientific publications, research findings and references. 

In addition the Author recommends selected standardised Rating scales (listed under assessment title in this website) Which he applied in his clinical practice and  proved to be extremely useful at the phase of  assessment, and at the review phases /progress of a wide range of mental health disorders .

Dr. Akeel  Abdul Wahab professional  focus was on mental health public awareness and mental health anti stigma,  hospital and community based programs. 

In addition to developing the general psychiatric services and establishment of newly specialised psychiatric services  such as the national psycho- oncology service, the Hospital psychiatric liaison service and the national rehabilitation addiction centre , AbuDhabi, UAE.

He had also been on the advisory boards of numerous service management National committees and councils and author of several service and medico-legal documents and policies both in the UK and UAE.

He became a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists  (MRCPsych) in 1988 and awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, UK.(FRCPsych).

He was the clinical Tutor  and had secured full accreditation  of the higher professional training scheme of Ayrshire Districts by the Royal College of Psychiatrists, UK.

He was the chairman of the postgraduate committee of south Glasgow higher professional training scheme , Glasgow University, Glasgow. Scotland,UK

Dr Abdulwahab  worked as a specialist psychiatrist at South Leeds Hospitals & Leeds University

“Jimmy's”, as it is affectionately known, is internationally famous as Europe’s largest teaching hospital.

1988-1991 Dr Abdulwahab held the position of a Senior registrar in General Adult psychiatry and learning disability, The Royal Edinburgh hospital, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK.

The hospital opened in 1813. At first it was only for patients whose families could afford to pay. The West House, now called Mackinnon House, opened in 1842, for poor patients. 

 

The hospital was established by Doctor Andrew Duncan, following the death of Robert Fergusson, a Scottish poet who died in 1774 following mental health problems caused by a head injury Andrew Duncan wanted to establish a hospital in Edinburgh that would care for the mentally ill of the city and after launching an appeal in 1792 a fund of £2,000 was granted in 1806 by Parliament. In 1807 a Royal charter was granted by King George III and the Edinburgh Lunatic Asylum was then established as a public body. 

A villa in Morningside, along with four acres of land, was then purchased and in 1809 the foundation stone was laid. The Edinburgh Lunatic Asylum first opened in 1813

Between 1995 and 2004.

Dr. Akeel A. Abdul Wahab was a Senior Consultant Psychiatrist & Medical Director, British Medical Consulting Centre, Dubai, UAE.

MEDICAL MANAGEMENT & SERVICES ESTABLISMENTS 

Dr Abdulwahb was responsible  for the establishment of several Hospital and community based services in the UAE & in the UK and had implemented the principles of comprehensive care, Family support, mental health education and mental health anti stigma principles, the following are summaries of the main services:

1. Psychiatric day care service, Tawam Hospital, UAE(1998)

2. Hospital psychiatric liaison services Tawam Hospital , UAE (1997)

3. Establishment of the first  National psycho- oncology service, based at the National cancer centre,Tawam Hospital, Al  Ain, Abu Dhabi, UAE (1997)

 The psycho-oncology service was presented by Dr Abdulwahab at :

  •         The Fifth World Congress of Psycho-Oncology, Melbourne,        Australia September 2000

  •         The second Arabian Gulf medical association conference &

              Exhibition, Abu Dhabi, UAE, October 2000 .

The core of the psych-Oncology service was to identify/diagnose  mental health disorders among patients with cancer who were attending  the national cancer centre, Tawam Hospital and aimed to provide intensive psychological support ,counselling, psychotherapies,  Psychiatric treatment and  also  provided mental health education /information to cancer patients and their  families.​

4. Dr Abdulahab was appointed by HH the president of the HH president's Office  to  establish of the first  national rehabilitation addiction centre (NRC), Abu Dhabi, UAE. 

 ( June 2001), in addition to his medical administrative responsibilities,

Dr Abdulwahab  had managed to Institute the affiliation with The National Addiction Centre, king's College Hospital, London.UK.

The Addiction service strategies Scheme and Model for UAE, was Presented by

Dr Abdulwahab  at the 10th congress  of  the international society for biochemical research on Alcoholism & Addiction, Yokohama,Japan,July 2000 .

5. Development and expansion and reshaping  of the learning disability services, Ayrshire, Scotland UK. (1991-1995)

6. Chaired & membership of several National strategic mental health services Advisory bodies and committees - UAE & UK (1989-2004)
